Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, described Paul Scholes’s sending-off for handball in the Uefa Super Cup as “an instinctive thing”. Since when has deliberately palming the ball been an instinct in a sport in which it is expressly forbidden? It was cheating, simple as that.
